Visa policy of a nation deals with the requirement that a foreign national wishing to enter that country should obtain a VISA. It is a permit to travel / enter /stay in that particular country. As of 2015, VISA free entries are denied in almost all the countries.

Visa History – Australia:

  • In 1970’s, Australia was one of the first nations to replace ink-based stamps with secured stick-on labels.
  • In 1987, computers were used for the first time to process visitor visa applications in overseas Australian Immigration Offices.
  • Again in 1990, Immigration Records and Information System (IRIS II) was introduced to simplify immigration clearance by enabling across the counter visa issue thus naming as the most advanced visa processing system in the world.
  • In 1996, Australia became the first country to launch electronic visas. The Electronic Travel Authority system (ETA) was launched to link the electronic visas to the applicant’s passport. Thus visa sticker issuance was ceased in 2015.

Australian Student Visa – Introduction:

International Students applying for any Australian University should get a Australian student visa (subclass 500). This allows the student to stay in Australia for up to 5 years depending upon their enrolment.

Below are the documents required to be submitted to the Department of Home Affairs of the Australian Government to get an Australian student visa.

  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from the University.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  • Proof for financial ability to cover all the expenses

However in 2016, a new Simplified Australian student visa Framework (SSVF) was implemented to determine the amount of documents a student needs to apply along with their Australian student visa application should be based on their country of citizenship and the University in which the student enrolled.


Australian Government announced the post study work visa in March 2013. It is referred to as 485 visa Australia and enables a student to obtain a post study work permit on a temporary basis.

International students can avail any one of the below Australian student visa’s:

  • Post – study Work Stream visa - Graduation & Above
  • To obtain this type of Australian student visa, a student should qualify the following conditions:

  • Should have completed at least 16 to 24 months (or more) of studies (either bachelor’s or masters’ or doctorate) in Australia.
  • The student should have obtained the degree not more than 6 months of the visa application.
  • The stay years for the completion bachelor degree is 2 years and for masters it can vary from 2 to 3 years based on the qualification.
  • If a student has completed doctorate, the stay period can extend up to 4 years.
  • This visa allows the students to bring their family.

Graduate Work Stream visa – Lesser than graduate degrees To obtain this type of Australian student visa, a student should qualify the following conditions:

  • Should have completed at least 16 to 24 months (or more) of studies (either diploma or certificate III or trade level certificate) in Australia.
  • The student should have obtained the degree not more than 6 months of the visa application.
  • The qualification should be related to Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and should be on the high demand list.
  • Aston University’s Women in Engineering International Scholarship
  • A student can stay and work for 18 months in this visa
  • This visa allows the students to bring their family.


This visa comes under Subclass 476. This kind of Australian student visa is one of the most popular ways that provide opportunities to the engineering graduates for getting employment.

It is a temporary visa which provides the right to work in Australia for fresh engineering graduates. With this, they may become eligible for permanent residency or Provisional Skilled visa.

The following requirements has to be met for getting this visa:

  • Age should be less than or equal to 31 years.
  • Should have an engineering qualification from any of the institutions that are accredited with Washington Accord in past 2 years (Exceptions are given to few institutions).
  • No Skilled recognised visa or Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) should be applied or held by the student.
  • Specified health requirements should be met.
  • The student can bring their family and can stay up to 18 months using this temporary visa.
  • Documents that support English proficiency are also mandatory. s

Qualification to be satisfied:

In order to apply for this visa, the students should have any one of the below mentioned qualifications within two years:

  • Bachelor’s
  • Master’s
  • Doctoral
  • Specified health requirements should be met.
  • Postgraduate Diploma

The above degrees should have specialization in any of the below Engineering courses:

  • Civil
  • Structural
  • Chemical
  • Environmental
  • Electrical and electronics
  • Mechanical, Production and Plant charities
  • Mining and Material Plant charities
